It was time for the regular meeting of the Fairfield Elementary School GLAM Club.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe GLAM Club is open to fifth-grade girls and is designed to help boost their self-esteem,\u2019\u201d said school Gifted Resource teacher Laura Burnette. \u201cAt any meeting we have 40 to 50 young ladies in attendance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The GLAM Club was established in the 2009-2010 school year following the receipt of a Building Futures Grant from the Virginia Beach Education Foundation.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5984\" src=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/GLAM-1.jpg\" alt=\"GLAM 1\" width=\"5760\" height=\"3840\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/GLAM-1.jpg 5760w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/GLAM-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/GLAM-1-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/GLAM-1-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/GLAM-1-400x267.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 5760px) 100vw, 5760px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cLinda Whitehead, since retired, was originally the driving force of really pushing the idea to start a girls group at the elementary level,\u201d said Jennifer Mazur, former Fairfield and current Salem Middle School art teacher. \u201cShe was volunteering with teenage girls after school and saw a huge decline in their self-esteem. She was afraid that without a specialized program, our girls would be on that same path.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The two joined forces with former school counselor Carrie Bosseler to put together the framework of the club.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs the counselor, Carrie saw the potential for the girls\u2019 group to be very powerful especially when we had so many mentors on board to support the program,\u201d added Mazur. \u201cI wanted to use cooperative learning strategies in an environment that wasn&#8217;t academically driven but socially driven.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5986\" src=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/GLAM-3.jpg\" alt=\"GLAM 3\" width=\"5760\" height=\"3840\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/GLAM-3.jpg 5760w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/GLAM-3-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/GLAM-3-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/GLAM-3-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/GLAM-3-400x267.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 5760px) 100vw, 5760px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The GLAM Club meets twice monthly and includes three main parts: time with a mentor, whole group activities and reflection of what they have learned, achieved and were motivated by the activities or meeting topics.
