\u201cHow do you remember all of this information?\u201d fifth-grade student Carla Roby asked Kempsville High School senior Jacob Matherly after seeing his \u201cSwirling Milk\u201d chemistry demonstration, an experiment designed to show the effects of a surfactant on the fat in milk.<\/p>\n

\u201cFirst, you learn facts at the subatomic level and then you build from there,\u201d he eagerly responded as the surrounding audience of fourth- and fifth-grade students marveled with \u201coooohs\u201d and \u201cahhs.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"IMG_1461\"<\/a>\u201cI started learning in middle school science and then learned more as I took chemistry and science classes throughout high school,\u201d Matherly continued.<\/p>\n

That was one of scores of questions elementary students from Kempsville and Providence elementary schools asked their high school counterparts as they participated in the annual \u201cChemistry Field Day\u201d hosted by Kempsville High School\u2019s Chemistry Club Jan. 20 and 21.<\/p>\n

\"IMG_1389\"<\/a>\u201cIt\u2019s an opportunity for our high school Chemistry Club to expose younger students to the fun of science,\u201d said AP chemistry teacher and club sponsor Maureen Morse. \u201cThe high school students love it. They spend hours after school preparing the various stations and their descriptions of experiments.\u201d<\/p>\n

As elementary students rotated through stations of experiments ranging from \u201cDry Ice Bubbles\u201d to \u201cOobleck\u201d to \u201cGold & Silver Pennies\u201d they asked a flurry of questions which the high school students happily answered with easy-to-understand, science-based responses.<\/p>\n

\"IMG_1552\"<\/a>After the hour-plus, fun-filled session – and seeing the grand finale of a gummy bear combustion demonstration – Morse had a question of her own for the elementary students.<\/p>\n

\u201cHow many of you are interested in science?\u201d<\/p>\n

The chorus of students overwhelmingly responded, \u201cMe!\u201d<\/p>\n
