They had a full school day ahead of them after all.<\/p>\n<p>Dressing up as book characters is only one of the many ways Creeds Elementary School students and staff are celebrating Reading Month throughout January with the rest of the school division.<\/p>\n<p>However, amid the spirit days and other special events, what is on everyone\u2019s minds is the fate a pig named Wilbur and the work of a spider named Charlotte.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s because everyone at Creeds is reading <em>Charlotte\u2019s Web<\/em> by E.B. White as part of a One Book for One School program organized by Creeds reading specialist Jennifer Haws.<\/p>\n<p>And by \u201ceveryone\u201d Creeds principal Casey Conger will tell you it involves <em>everyone<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Casey-Conger-tweet-with-bus-drivers.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4647\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4647\" src=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Casey-Conger-tweet-with-bus-drivers.jpg\" alt=\"Casey Conger tweet with bus drivers\" width=\"658\" height=\"683\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Casey-Conger-tweet-with-bus-drivers.jpg 658w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Casey-Conger-tweet-with-bus-drivers-289x300.jpg 289w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 658px) 100vw, 658px\" \/><\/a>Bus drivers are reading Charlotte\u2019s Web. The school counselor is reading it. Office staff, cafeteria staff,\u00a0teacher assistants and specialists are reading it. Every class is reading a chapter together at school daily, and families are invited to reread at home at night. The Creeds PTA purchased a copy of the book for every student and staff member with extra copies for guest readers and other school visitors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe wanted to create dialogue around a single text,\u201d said Conger.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s working.<\/p>\n<p>Ask second-graders in Mrs. Harris\u2019 class if they are reading outside of school, and you\u2019ll hear about\u00a0family book clubs.<\/p>\n<p><em>I have one brother here, and we read the book before we go to bed and then on the bus. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>I have an older sister and we tell each other what we think is going to happen next.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>My brother and I tell each other what was our favorite part of the chapter.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>I have a twin sister and last night we talked about how they might kill Wilbur. <\/em><\/p>\n<p>Saving Wilbur was the topic of discussion for Harris and her students after they finished Chapter 11 while reading together in the school\u2019s makeshift barn. Art teacher Sharon Bivens transformed a stairwell into a barn during the winter break \u2014 complete with a web, pen for Wilbur,\u00a0horse stables and bales of hay.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Harris.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4649\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4649\" src=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Harris.jpg\" alt=\"Harris\" width=\"2514\" height=\"1676\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Harris.jpg 2514w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Harris-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Harris-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Harris-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Harris-450x300.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2514px) 100vw, 2514px\" \/><\/a>From a plush reading chair next to a lamp, Harris asks students about Charlotte\u2019s first message in her web, \u201cSome Pig,\u201d and whether or not it will make Wilbur\u2019s caretakers think they have an extraordinary pig.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow many of you think Charlotte\u2019s plan is working and why?\u201d asked Harris.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes, it\u2019s working! They think he\u2019s special,\u201d answered one student. His classmates agree.<\/p>\n<p>The students also have predictions for what may happen in Chapter 12 and beyond.<\/p>\n<p><em>I think Charlotte is going to weave more words in the web. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>I think there will be a pig festival. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>I think they\u2019re not going to kill Wilbur. <\/em><\/p>\n<p>Harris observes that her students are not the only ones excited about reading.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI walk down the hallways and hear groups of students talking about the book, discussing the characters, or predicting what\u2019s going to happen,\u201d she said.\u00a0\u201cReading in Wilbur\u2019s barn has become my class\u2019s favorite part of every day!\u00a0 We bring our books, our blankets, and our anticipation for what\u2019s going to happen next.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/students-in-barn.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4650\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4650\" src=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/students-in-barn.jpg\" alt=\"students in barn\" width=\"2373\" height=\"1582\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/students-in-barn.jpg 2373w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/students-in-barn-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/students-in-barn-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/students-in-barn-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/students-in-barn-450x300.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2373px) 100vw, 2373px\" \/><\/a>Haws notes that student posters throughout the school and daily reminders help to keep everyone on the same page \u2014 literally.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur morning announcements remind everyone which chapter is being read that day and ask a guiding question so there is a purpose for the reading.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Haws adds that the shared reading is only one aspect, and the book offers many opportunities for learning.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur fifth-graders are practicing research now, so they are using E.B. White as the subject of their research. Then they are going to present their work in teams to the other grade levels so everyone can learn,\u201d explained Haws.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn fourth and fifth grade, they are creating Kahoot! challenges and making questions about the book. They are going back and forth to try to stump each other,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Harris cannot hide her enthusiasm for the schoolwide reading initiative.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is such a great way to promote unity and create a positive learning environment throughout our school,\u201d she said. \u201cYay for Reading Month and Charlotte\u2019s Web!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>They stepped off the buses one by one.
