{"id":3560,"date":"2015-04-19T12:16:51","date_gmt":"2015-04-19T16:16:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/?p=3560"},"modified":"2015-04-20T11:22:17","modified_gmt":"2015-04-20T15:22:17","slug":"volunteers-of-vbcps-edna-carr","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/volunteers-of-vbcps-edna-carr\/","title":{"rendered":"Volunteers of VBCPS: Edna Carr"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Edna Carr has a standing appointment on the second floor of the Adult Learning Center (ALC) every Tuesday and Thursday afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMrs. Carr is a dedicated and dependable volunteer,\u201d said ALC volunteer coordinator Dianne Dollins. \u201cShe is always on time and prepared to tutor. He added that he was \u201ctoo hard-headed in school\u201d as a child.<\/p>\n<p>Another adult learner, who said he was incarcerated at one point in his life,\u00a0holds up a legal pad and flips through the pages of an essay he\u2019s been working on with help from Carr. \u201cShe makes me excel in my learning,\u201d he said. \u201cI am going to ace the GED all because of Mrs. Carr.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reading is not all that Carr covers in the center\u2019s Adult Basic Education (ABE) program. There are lessons in math, social studies and more. \u201cTake her picture in front of the map,\u201d said two students, and the rest agreed because of their recent discussions about geography.<\/p>\n<p>Carr laughed and obliged, and two students proudly joined her.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Edna-w-students.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3564\" src=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Edna-w-students.jpg\" alt=\"Edna w students\" width=\"2289\" height=\"1526\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Edna-w-students.jpg 2289w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Edna-w-students-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Edna-w-students-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Edna-w-students-450x300.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2289px) 100vw, 2289px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Carr said later, \u201cHelping them to improve their math and reading skills makes them become an individual, and they think, \u2018I can do it!\u2019\u00a0They have families \u2013 they need to be able to do these things to help them and have their independence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>ALC director Paul Palombo appreciates Carr\u2019s passion for adult learners and her determination to help each one be successful. \u201cHer ability to demonstrate relevance for the students makes Mrs. Carr an asset as a volunteer,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Like Dollins,\u00a0Palombo\u00a0praised Carr\u2019s dedication and dependability, noting that her husband\u2019s death last year did not deter her from continuing her volunteer service to the center.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have three loves,\u201d said Carr,\u00a0\u201cGod, family and teaching.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And Carr\u2019s love of teaching and care for her students is evident to them.\u00a0\u201cMrs. Carr is a very nice lady who has a lot of patience and takes her time to help you,\u201d said William. \u201cShe is a beautiful soul.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>To find ways you can get involved, visit the division\u2019s Get Connected page at <\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vbschools.com\/volunteers\/hours\/landing.asp\">vbschools.com\/getconnected<\/a><em> and find volunteer opportunities available in VBCPS schools.
