Margo Day, the vice president of US education business, for Microsoft toured through the building and observed four different classes.<\/p>\n<p>Specifically, Day was at the school to observe how staff was integrating Microsoft software as &#8211; well as technology in general \u2013 in the day\u2019s instruction.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is always rewarding when we have the opportunity to collaborate with business partners and industry,\u201d said Lisette Diehl, coordinator of the Governor\u2019s STEM and Technology Academy. \u201cToday\u2019s visit provided our students and staff a chance to have an open dialogue with top executives from Microsoft about what they are teaching and learning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Throughout the morning, Day stopped in four classrooms. These certifications demonstrate that students have required skillsets in specific Office programs, which, according to Microsoft, could earn an entry-level business employee as much as $16,000 more in annual salary than uncertified peers.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3264\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3264\" style=\"width: 584px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/IMG_7732.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-3264\" src=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/IMG_7732-682x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Day takes a close look at Landstown High School's robot, which was built by the students to use in competitions. \" width=\"584\" height=\"876\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/IMG_7732-682x1024.jpg 682w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/IMG_7732-199x300.jpg 199w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/IMG_7732.jpg 1037w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3264\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Day takes a close look at Landstown High School&#8217;s robot, which was built by the students to use in competitions.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Students are able to earn these MOS certifications while in high school at no cost to them.\u00a0A similar course outside of school offering all of the Office certifications and unlimited testing, could cost thousands of dollars.<\/p>\n<p>As she walked by, students were working on various Microsoft Excel assignments.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a great skill to have throughout your life,\u201d Day said. Adding to another student, \u201cYou\u2019re going to love Excel. You\u2019re going to use Excel for the rest of your life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Day\u2019s stop at Landstown was short-lived as she headed on to Richmond to meet with the state superintendent; however, Diehl said her time made a lasting impact.<\/p>\n<p>The students were proud to discuss their work and converse about the variety of ways they utilize technology in the classroom,\u201d Diehl said. \u201cIt was truly a remarkable experience to watch the students shine and interact with Ms. Day and the Microsoft team.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Governor\u2019s STEM and Technology Academy at Landstown High School had a very special visitor walking the halls.
