VBCPS is fortunate to have many individuals from the community, businesses,\u202fmilitary, faith-based organizations and government agencies\u202fwho mentor students in our schools.\u202fTheir work will be highlighted on The Core throughout January.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is an honor to work with children and to help them learn and succeed in school and in life,\u201d says ITC Jim Berube.<\/p>\n<p>Berube, who serves in the U.S. Coast Guard, also wanted to serve students and decided to become a mentor through the Maritime Intelligence Fusion Center Atlantic\u2019s (USCG MIFCLANT) new partnership with Strawbridge Elementary School.<\/p>\n<p>Berube visits Strawbridge every Thursday for 90 minutes and works with second\u00a0grader Brayden Smithson during the independent work period in his language arts class. VBCPS partnership coordinator Laura Smart noted that Berube maintained his weekly school visits even when he was officially on leave.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/02-Mentor_Berube-at-Strawbridge.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-2921\" src=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/02-Mentor_Berube-at-Strawbridge-1024x682.jpg\" alt=\"02 Mentor_Berube at Strawbridge\" width=\"584\" height=\"388\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/02-Mentor_Berube-at-Strawbridge-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/02-Mentor_Berube-at-Strawbridge-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/02-Mentor_Berube-at-Strawbridge-450x300.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" \/><\/a>Berube makes the time to mentor not only because he enjoys it but also because he sees that it makes a difference. \u201cI feel especially privileged to mentor a student and to see his grades improve,\u201d he says, \u201cbut more importantly, I see\u00a0the student\u2019s confidence increase.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Research indicates that students may experience improved academic performance and increased confidence as a result of their involvement in\u00a0school-based mentorships.\u00a0Likewise, mentors experience personal satisfaction from making personal contributions to youth.
