Hearing a student say her name for the first time is a revelation, she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s proof that love, patience and belief can carve a voice out of silence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Principal Melissa George said Meekings deserves the honor for creating lifechanging opportunities for students with disabilities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHer daily grace, fierce belief in students and tireless advocacy make her a dynamic educator and a true champion for all students.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Assistant principal Carrie Pierce said Meekings ensures all students gain essential skills necessary to become independent and successful adults.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHer initiatives have provided students with authentic, real-world job experiences,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_14567\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14567\" style=\"width: 225px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Meekings6-scaled.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-14567\" src=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Meekings6-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Meekings6-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Meekings6-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Meekings6-1152x1536.jpg 1152w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Meekings6-1536x2048.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Meekings6-400x533.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Meekings6-scaled.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-14567\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bailee Meekings\u2019 students operate the Cox High School coffee shop each morning, serving coffee and a variety of snacks to students and staff.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Meekings manages the Cox High Coffee Shop. Her students and volunteers make, sell and deliver beverages and food items in the shop and throughout the school.<\/p>\n<p>They learn to handle monetary transactions and customer service. Their hard work is rewarded with an \u201cEmployee of the Month\u201d award.<\/p>\n<p>Her students also prepare two staff luncheons during the year, learning the importance of teamwork, responsibility and community.<\/p>\n<p>They gain employment experience through the Work Experience Program, coordinated by Meekings. Some head out daily to jobs at local businesses, including Food Lion and Moe\u2019s Southwest Grill.<\/p>\n<p>Meekings realized the need for a proper changing table for students with diapering needs and collaborated with the school\u2019s construction technology class on design and construction.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, she planned the first citywide Spring Fling. Virginia Teachers for Tomorrow (VTFT) students volunteered for the sensory-friendly prom-style event that celebrated inclusion, joy and community.<\/p>\n<p>Meekings serves on numerous school committees and is coach of the gymnastics and competition cheer teams. She also sponsors the club Beach Buddies, pairing her students with others at the school to promote inclusion and friendship.<\/p>\n<p>She has mentored teachers and provided volunteer opportunities for general education students. Several have been inspired to pursue special education as a career after graduation.<\/p>\n<p>Army Lt. Col. Matthew Shirley and his wife Ashley praised their daughter\u2019s teacher for her dedication to students\u2019 educational journey and personal growth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHer care for students goes far beyond academics,\u201d Lt. Col.
