The Virginia Beach Convention Center was abuzz with more than 3,500 students and family members Oct. 16 during the VBCPS Academies and Advanced Academic Programs Night.<\/p>\n

Delysia Turnbull came prepared.<\/p>\n

The Independence Middle School seventh grader had a list of questions for current academy students, including \u201cWhy did you pick this program?\u201d and \u201cHow is the program helping you achieve what you want to achieve?\u201d<\/p>\n

She also asked about dual enrollment and availability of some of her extracurricular interests, such as cheerleading, chorus and track.<\/p>\n

The Governor\u2019s STEM Academy at Landstown wasn\u2019t on her original list, but after visiting with some of the students and learning about careers in engineering, she may consider applying.<\/p>\n

Vedha Nuthi shared information about the Bayside High Health Sciences Academy. The senior plans to become a doctor one day.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

And the Salem High Visual & Performing Arts Academy drew her interest, with strands in dance, instrumental music, theatre, visual art and vocal music.<\/p>\n

Vedha Nuthi and fellow classmates in the Bayside High School Health Sciences Academy were on hand to answer questions about their curriculum.<\/p>\n

The senior said she chose the school because she wants to study medicine in college and become a pediatrician.<\/p>\n

She became CPR-certified and has shadowed a variety of medical professionals, including a dermatologist, ophthalmologist and pharmacist.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou will learn about every single bone in the human body<\/em>,\u201d she told an interested student.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou get prepared for working in the medical field, and that includes psychology, psychiatrics, forensic science and more,\u201d she said. \u201cThere are so many possibilities.\u201d<\/p>\n

When someone asked if the curriculum was challenging, Vedha replied, \u201cIt\u2019s all about putting in the effort.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kempsville High Entrepreneurship & Business Academy sophomores Gianna McCollins, left, and Isabella Waldron spoke about how they are learning to develop and run a business.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Kempsville High Entrepreneurship & Business Academy sophomore Isabella Waldron said the academy might be a good fit for those \u201cwho like finance and being creative.\u201d<\/p>\n

She energetically described how she and classmates are developing an idea for a business. They\u2019ll pitch judges and possibly receive funding to bring the product or service to fruition.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s kind of like \u2018Shark Tank,\u2019 \u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe learn about business and work together in groups,\u201d she said. \u201cWe get prepared for real life.\u201d<\/p>\n

Plaza Middle School Middle Years Program(MYP) students Dia Basubk and Ali Kepka talked about their communications with foreign exchange students in Argentina and putting together a \u201cDay of Service\u201d to help local charitable organizations.<\/p>\n

Nearby, Achievable Dream Academy students Sanaa Neely and Kasaundra Selby were excited to share information about their school.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur classes are small and we have strong student-teacher relationships,\u201d said Sanaa, a sophomore.<\/p>\n

The school division is proud of the wide range of options for students, said Thomas Quinn, executive director of secondary teaching and learning.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur advanced academic pathways give students the opportunity to pursue studies that align with the challenges they\u2019re passionate about addressing,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese pathways not only reflect our students\u2019 diverse interests but align with the current and future needs of our region, preparing them for success in employment, enlistment, or enrollment.\u201d<\/p>\n
