VBCPS middle and high school students and teachers were invited to celebrate the vibrant surf and ocean culture of Virginia Beach at the Coastal Edge Steel Pier Classic presented by Katin during the Memorial Day weekend.<\/p>\n

More than 100 ocean-inspired artistic creations were displayed and offered for sale in the Coastal Edge Student and Teacher Art Pavilion located on the sand at the First Street jetty.<\/p>\n

Skate decks and white canvas Vans shoes were transformed into unique works of art by VBCPS students and displayed at the Vans Custom Culture Art Show and the Eastern Skateboard Art Exhibit Memorial Day weekend.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

The pavilion showcased the student-teacher art show, the Vans Custom Culture Art Show and the Eastern Skateboard Art Exhibit featuring skate decks and white canvas Vans shoes transformed into unique works of art.<\/p>\n

Prizes were awarded in the artwork, skate deck and shoe categories.<\/p>\n

Plaza Middle art teacher Anne Waterfield served as chairperson of the student and teacher art exhibition.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis has been such a great opportunity for our students,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Students and teachers used a variety of media, including surfboards, masks and tote bags.<\/p>\n

Richmond resident Brenda Walker attended the student-teacher art show at the Coastal Edge Steel Pier Classic and purchased a surfboard painted by Ocean Lakes High School student Esther Gammille. Esther\u2019s entry won second place.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Plaza Middle student Remi Chakin transformed a mask into a dog named \u201cFetch.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jazlyn Carrington\u2019s acrylic painting, titled \u201cYellow Moray,\u201d portrayed a moray eel and fish underwater, while Hailey Grabb\u2019s watercolor featured the word \u201chope\u201d swirled into clouds with a lighthouse in the foreground.<\/p>\n

Richmond resident Brenda Walker and family own a beach house on the North End. They rode their bikes down to the oceanfront and visited the student art pavilion.<\/p>\n

\u201cEverything was so awesome,\u201d Walker said. \u201cI love seeing art, especially by young people.\u201d<\/p>\n

She purchased a surfboard painted by Esther Gammille titled \u201cSwirls of Sunset.\u201d The Ocean Lakes High School student\u2019s entry won second place in the Artwork category.<\/p>\n

Walker described Esther\u2019s unique artwork as \u201cjoyful.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a beautiful piece with rays of sunshine beaming through,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Angela Gonzales thanked Coastal Edge for allowing her to participate in the show. \u201cIt was an amazing opportunity for me as an art teacher to showcase my ceramic jewelry alongside other teaching artists and especially with student artists,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

The North Landing Elementary art teacher applauded former student David Morales for his entry \u201cKing Neptune.\u201d The Kellam High senior, who was recently a student teacher at North Landing, placed first in the show\u2019s artwork division.<\/p>\n

\u201cEncouraging teacher artists\u2019 participation shows the audience that art is a labor of love, we practice what we teach and that is can be a business,\u201d Gonzales said.<\/p>\n

Coastal Edge President Deepak Nachnani said it was an honor to work with remarkable VBCPS students and their dedicated teachers who shape future designers, artists and community leaders.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt Coastal Edge, we believe in celebrating self-expression and investing in the cultural pillars that shape our identity: art, fashion, music and action sports,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese students represent the future of creativity and it\u2019s a privilege to provide a platform where their bold original voices can shine.\u201d<\/p>\n
