That meant the opportunity to hop in the saddle and ride one of three horses \u2014 Summer, Titan or Gatsby \u2014 in the outdoor riding arena.<\/p>\n<p>Equi-Kids senior riding instructor Candyce Boykin gave directions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWalk on! Reins in your left hand!\u201d she exclaimed.<\/p>\n<p>A mini horse show ensued as volunteers led the horses and their student riders around orange cones.<\/p>\n<p>The seven students from the Seatack Elementary &#8211; An Achievable Dream Academy were selected by counselors and administrators to participate in the partnership between VBCPS and Equi-Kids.\u00a0 The nonprofit, therapeutic riding program is located in the Heritage Park neighborhood.<\/p>\n<p>Four different groups of Seatack Elementary students in grades one through five are selected to participate in the six-week sessions during the year, including once in the summer.<\/p>\n<p>Christopher Bracey is the school\u2019s director of academic and student affairs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe look at the students and decide who would benefit from the six-week program,\u201d he said. \u201cWe ask, how can this impact and enrich them?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Parents complete an application process for the once-a-week program. A maximum of eight participants are selected for each session.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/EquiK6-scaled.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-13778\" src=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/EquiK6-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/EquiK6-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/EquiK6-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/EquiK6-1152x1536.jpg 1152w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/EquiK6-1536x2048.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/EquiK6-400x533.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/EquiK6-scaled.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a>Students learn all about the equipment (such as saddles and bridles), how to be safe near horses and respectful of the horse\u2019s space, the importance of wearing a helmet, how to care for horses, and lots more.<\/p>\n<p>Horses are ridden each week with the assistance of volunteers, except for the introductory, week one lesson.<\/p>\n<p>On the recent session finale, the group split in half with each taking a turn to ride a horse and mix a treat for their four-legged equine friends.<\/p>\n<p>Program manager Haley Ward showed them how to stir oats, water, honey and molasses together before allowing each to feed the mixture to some of the horses in the stable.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe horses get very excited about this stuff,\u201d she told the students, \u201cso hold the sides of the bowl tight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sure enough, horses Braveheart and Diesel were excited to eat the sweet treat.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_13777\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13777\" style=\"width: 225px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/EquiK5-scaled.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-13777\" src=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/EquiK5-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/EquiK5-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/EquiK5-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/EquiK5-1152x1536.jpg 1152w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/EquiK5-1536x2048.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/EquiK5-400x533.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/EquiK5-scaled.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-13777\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">With help from Equi-Kids program manager Haley Ward, Seatack Elementary students mixed a sweet treat and offered the mixture to some of the horses.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Volunteer Tricia Haverty grew up riding horses and is a retired preschool teacher.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey come here very timid,\u201d Haverty said of the students. \u201cAnd after six weeks \u2013 they are saying &#8211; I got this!\u201d \u00a0Riding horses takes confidence and bravery, she said.<\/p>\n<p>Catholic High School freshman Anna Campbell is also a Equi-Kids volunteer who loves horseback riding.<\/p>\n<p>She said volunteering with the organization is a rewarding way to give back. \u201cSeeing the children flourish and so happy is incredibly fulfilling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Equi-Kids program director Kathy Chitwood said students have benefited physically, mentally and socially from the VBCPS partnership.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey learn proper behaviors and interactions with people as well as the horses,\u201d she said. \u201cIn turn, they learn to interact better with people like their peers, families and friends.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chitwood said positive teacher feedback has included the fact that \u201ckids retain information longer when we incorporate what they are learning in their classroom in school into our lesson plans at the farm.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bracey said students have \u201ccome a long way\u201d thanks to the Equi-Kids collaboration.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTeachers have noticed students\u2019 improvement in many areas, including discipline and behavior,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The program is also a confidence-builder, he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey take that back to the classroom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Equi-Kids provides lifechanging equine-assisted services to children and adults who have mental, physical, social or learning disabling conditions.
