Throughout the first quarter, eight teams of\u00a0two or three\u00a0students worked on\u00a0the type of machine\u00a0that Webster\u2019s dictionary describes as \u201ca comically involved, complicated invention, laboriously contrived to perform a simple operation.\u201d The simple operation this year was to \u201czip a zipper.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1347\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1347\" style=\"width: 771px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/Rube-Goldberg-winners-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1347\" alt=\"Eighth-graders John Ashworth (a three-time champion) and Nathan Cote and sixth-grader Cody Kancs were the 2013 CLMS Rube Goldberg champions. \" src=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/Rube-Goldberg-winners-2.jpg\" width=\"771\" height=\"676\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/Rube-Goldberg-winners-2.jpg 771w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/Rube-Goldberg-winners-2-300x263.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/Rube-Goldberg-winners-2-342x300.jpg 342w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 771px) 100vw, 771px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1347\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Eighth-graders John Ashworth (a three-time champion) and Nathan Cote and sixth-grader Cody Kancs were the 2013 CLMS Rube Goldberg champions.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThrough the club, students learn a great deal about the engineering design process, and sometimes what is envisioned is harder to make a reality than we think, said sixth-grade science teacher and club sponsor Brian Miller.<\/p>\n<p>As a special surprise for students, parents and staff, Miller created his own Rube Goldberg machine, which\u00a0ran the full length of the school auditorium and across the entire stage; it included\u00a0over 20 different steps.<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s winning team built a machine that completed the task of zipping a zipper in 16 different steps and worked without a flaw.\u00a0Team members were eighth-graders\u00a0John Ashworth (a three-time champion) and Nathan Cote and\u00a0sixth-grader\u00a0Cody Kancso. All teams worked\u00a0diligently in the spirit of science, engineering, Rube Goldberg, and fun.
