danced and played on their recorders while the Virginia Symphony wowed the young participants with a variety of music \u2014 Beethoven\u2019s Fifth Symphony, Leonard Bernstein\u2019s \u201cMambo,\u201d the Zimbabwe rhythmic dance \u201cMhande,\u201d and more.<\/p>\n<p>During six concerts over three days, VBCPS elementary students performed with professional musicians during \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.carnegiehall.org\/Education\/Programs\/Link-Up\/National-Program\/The-Orchestra-Moves\">The Orchestra Moves<\/a>\u201d at Sandler Center for the Performing Arts.<\/p>\n<p>In the weeks leading up to the concerts, students practiced singing and playing the recorders with their music teachers.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/25_VaSymphony_SandlerCenter_021225-78-scaled.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium Thalia Elementary had front-row seats:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cI think it\u2019s great,\u201d Kayden Bronson said.<\/li>\n<li>\u201cIt\u2019s exciting that we get to sing with an orchestra,\u201d Maria Argdal said.<\/li>\n<li>\u201cIt\u2019s neat to be so close and see what a violin and a trumpet look like,\u201d Kayden Jordan said.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Thalia music teacher Breanna McMillan said the students got increasingly excited as the concert date came closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey were especially excited about shouting \u2018Mambo!\u2019 during one of the pieces,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>The program reaches students throughout Hampton Roads with a hands-on curriculum. The orchestra doesn\u2019t play <em>for<\/em> them. A piccolo player introduces the woodwinds, a trumpetist talks about the brass family, a timpani drummer introduces the percussion section and a violinist (a former North Landing Elementary student) explains the strings family.<\/p>\n<p>Students walk away with an appreciation for nondigital music, and some are inspired to pick up an instrument at home in addition to the recorders provided by schools.<\/p>\n<p>The musicians get a lot out of the program as well, Martell said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey enjoy seeing the students engaged in the music,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p><a
