The VBCPS empowerment series Beach Girls Rock! for female fifth through eighth graders was held Oct. 19 at Princess Anne Middle School.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

High school students shared knowledge with more than 100 of their younger peers at the fall \u201cBeach Girls Rock!\u201d event, Oct. 19 at Princess Anne Middle School.<\/p>\n

Organized by the Office for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, the event illuminated opportunities available through the sciences, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) and focused on empowering young women in grades five to eight.<\/p>\n

Creeds Elementary fifth graders Kendall Teger and Bella Schooff said they learned a lot.<\/p>\n

It was nice that the high school students listened to them and \u201cfocused on how we felt,\u201d Kendall said. \u201cThey let us ask questions and made sure we got answers.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bella said she learned about the importance of being confident and making positive decisions.<\/p>\n

Both made a substance called \u201coobleck\u201d in the session \u201cWe Have Great Chemistry,\u201d hosted by the Landstown High STEM Academy Advanced Placement chemistry students. Cornstarch mixed with water created a solid, but turned to a liquid when pressure was applied.<\/p>\n

Bayside High School \u201cFemale Radiance Club\u201d members hosted a \u201cWhat I Wish I Had Known About High School\u201d session.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Kellam High\u2019s \u201cYoung Women Leaders Club\u201d and the \u201cFemale Radiance Club\u201d from Bayside High shared experiences on how to succeed socially, academically and emotionally before going to high school. Their workshops were titled \u201cWhat I Wish I Had Known About High School.\u201d<\/p>\n

They offered lots of tips, including \u201cDon\u2019t hesitate to ask for help; just be yourself\u201d and \u201cTake advice from someone you want to be like.\u201d<\/p>\n

Attendees were encouraged to be their own advocates.<\/p>\n

Other sessions included \u201cCareer Stories in STEM,\u201d \u201cA STEMulating Conversation\u201d and \u201cDeep Sea Tactics: The World of Underwater Robotics.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Landstown High School \u201cGirls Who Code\u201d club led a workshop teaching the fundamental skills of coding using Sphero tools.<\/p>\n

Virginia Beach Technical and Career Education Center students presented \u201cYou Mean There\u2019s a Class for That?\u201d<\/p>\n

They shared firsthand knowledge about some of the 23 credentialed technical programs, from early childhood education to dental assisting, welding, culinary arts, carpentry, TV communications and production, practical nursing and more.<\/p>\n

Parent sessions were also provided. Bayside High \u201cFemale Radiance Club\u201d President Lillian Yoder and Vice President Beverly Zapata-Hernandez spoke to a group of more than 30 about communicating and connecting with their children.<\/p>\n

Their club focuses on influencing females in the community in positive ways.<\/p>\n

They told parents to be patient and encourage independence while providing support.<\/p>\n

\u201cBe positive and give small compliments here and there,\u201d Beverly said. \u201cIt really makes a difference.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you say no; say why,\u201d Lillian advised.<\/p>\n

Green Run Collegiate student Nyla Stewart led a group to their designated sessions during Beach Girls Rock!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Shereen Williams-Allen attended parent sessions, visited exhibit booths and gathered information while her daughter Aman Allen, a Larkspur Middle eighth grader, participated in the event.<\/p>\n

Allen said Aman has some important decisions to make about high school. \u201cShe\u2019s at the age where she needs to grasp which route she wants to go,\u201d Allen said. \u201cThis was very helpful.\u201d<\/p>\n

Students also enjoyed lunch and participated in their choice of \u201cBetter Me\u201d activities, including yoga, origami and a dance party.<\/p>\n

Landstown Middle School eighth grade civics teacher Laura McAleer served as a\u00a0 volunteer. \u00a0She said girls in fifth through eighth grade are at \u201cvery influential age.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Beach Girls Rock! experience will \u201cfurther expand their interest in community, careers and future growth as leaders,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

The spring \u201cBeach Girls Rock!\u201d is scheduled for March 22, 2025 at Old Dominion University.<\/p>\n
