VBCPS superintendent Dr. Donald Robertson, Jr. spoke to more than 350 new VBCPS teachers during day one of orientation on Aug. 12.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

First-year teachers and those new to Virginia Beach City Public Schools were welcomed by Superintendent Dr. Donald Robertson Jr. Aug. 12, the first day of new educator orientation for the 2024-25 school year.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe operate as a team,\u201d he said. \u201cTeam Virginia Beach City Public Schools!\u201d<\/p>\n

The teachers visited their schools in the morning and then travelled to Bayside High School for lunch and professional learning sessions. Bayside\u2019s cheerleaders greeted them as they arrived.<\/p>\n

The three-day event was organized by the school system\u2019s Office of Professional Growth and Innovation. Coordinator Kelly Zimba said the goal is to<\/p>\n

make sure the teachers \u201cfeel totally equipped to kick off the new year.\u201d<\/p>\n

More than 350 gathered in the auditorium before dividing up into school groups.<\/p>\n

School Board Chair Kimberly Melnyk greeted the teachers.<\/p>\n

Dr. Robertson introduced them to VBCPS\u2019 mission, vision and strategic plan \u2014 \u201cCompass to 2025<\/a>.\u201d\u00a0 He spoke about some of his experiences as a teacher and stressed the importance of learning from mentors, teamwork, having classroom expectations and engaging parents in their children\u2019s education.<\/p>\n

\u201cTeaching is a phenomenal profession,\u201d he told them. \u201cIf you want to change the world; be a teacher.\u201d<\/p>\n
