Each school will be recognized this spring as official Tree Campuses by the Arbor Day Foundation.<\/p>\n<p>Fourth graders in Thalia Elementary\u2019s garden club recently gathered outside the school to celebrate their school\u2019s new redbud tree, led by principal Nicole Keros and teachers Alison Cooper and Samantha Clover.<\/p>\n<p>Clover started by listing several benefits trees have.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe beautiful trees on our campus, in our neighborhoods, and beyond, provide habitats for countless species of animals,\u201d said Clover, adding that trees cut pollution, prevent erosion and muffle sound.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/23_TES_ArborDay_040924-119-scaled.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-12117\" src=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/23_TES_ArborDay_040924-119-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/23_TES_ArborDay_040924-119-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/23_TES_ArborDay_040924-119-683x1024.jpg 683w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/23_TES_ArborDay_040924-119-768x1152.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/23_TES_ArborDay_040924-119-1024x1536.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/23_TES_ArborDay_040924-119-1365x2048.jpg 1365w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/23_TES_ArborDay_040924-119-400x600.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/23_TES_ArborDay_040924-119-scaled.jpg 1707w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a>Students added their favorite facts about trees.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTrees are part of nature,\u201d fourth grader Chloe Butts said. \u201cWe need them to grow, because they make us healthier.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thalia student Isabelle Rogers said, \u201cTrees breathe in carbon dioxide and make oxygen, which helps us breathe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brooke Costanza, city arborist with Virginia Beach Parks &amp; Recreation, helped students add dirt and replace mulch around the newly planted tree.<\/p>\n<p>Ashley Porter, a content integration specialist at Thalia Elementary used math and data analysis as part of the program.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe pulled infographics from Virginia Beach\u2019s Urban Forest Management Plan that support the tree initiative and allow our students to see data in a real-world scenario that impacts where they live,\u201d Porter said. \u201cWe were able to find various data pieces in the resource that support the math and science standards our students are already learning and share it through the lens of Arbor Day and our school\u2019s tree initiative.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For a school to become a Tree Campus, they must:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Form a tree team of staff, students and community members dedicated to achieving Tree Campus recognition.<\/li>\n<li>Develop an educational plan that connects students to tree and their global benefits, inside or outside the classroom.<\/li>\n<li>Have hands-on activities that bring the school\u2019s tree spirit to the community.<\/li>\n<li>Have an Arbor Day observance or tree celebration.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Bridget Mariano, the school division\u2019s K-12 programs and grants coordinator who oversees the Great Outdoors Learning Project, said the Virginia Beach community is extremely supportive of schools.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese partnerships help our students expand their understanding of their role in the local and global community now and in the future,\u201d she said. \u201cBesides the support from Virginia Beach Parks and Recreation, the Virginia Beach Master Gardener Tree Stewards served as consultants early in the process, and we hope to engage with them more in the future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/GPS_CorporateLanding.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-12122\" src=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/GPS_CorporateLanding-300x134.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"134\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/GPS_CorporateLanding-300x134.png 300w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/GPS_CorporateLanding-768x344.png 768w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/GPS_CorporateLanding-400x179.png 400w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/GPS_CorporateLanding.png 936w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Students at Corporate Landing Middle School used the VBTrees Inventory ArcGIS map to guide a research and action project ultimately leading to a student-designed tagging system. The school had 54 trees planted as part of Dominion Energy\u2019s offshore wind project. To offset the removal of trees to make room for landside transmission lines, new trees are being planted in various locations in Virginia Beach. Jackson Pryor, a student in Mrs. McTyre\u2019s class, said he enjoyed the event.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor every tree we plant, the more oxygen we get,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>City Councilman Michael Berlucchi was one of the dignitaries grabbing a shovel for the ceremony.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a member of City Council, I can tell you people in Virginia Beach love trees,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>This is the first year VBCPS has sought tree campus designations, and the division hopes to expand the initiative to include more schools next year.<\/p>\n<p>Michael Kirschman, the director of Virginia Beach Parks and Recreation, noted that the tree partnership is the latest in a long history of partnerships between his department and the schools, such as the longstanding after-school childcare program.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI probably remember every tree I planted,\u201d he said. \u201cThe kids who are part of today\u2019s event, years from now after they leave school, they\u2019ll come back and
