emojis representing feelings, including \u201clove,\u201d \u201chappy,\u201d \u201csurprised\u201d and \u201cscared.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI like to get creative with my imagination,\u201d said the Corporate Landing Elementary fourth grader.<\/p>\n<p>Her painting is among the approximately 250 pieces of student artwork on display through March 26 in The Fleming Gallery at the museum.<\/p>\n<p>Each school selected three entries for the Citywide Student Art Show in celebration of Youth Art Month.<\/p>\n<p>The young artists and their families were recently honored by the VBCPS Visual Arts Department at a reception in the museum.<\/p>\n<p>Students proudly walked through the gallery with friends and family to look at their artistic creations.<\/p>\n<p>Olivia\u2019s mother, Ashley Weddle, beamed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOlivia loves art,\u201d she said, adding that having the work on display validates her daughter\u2019s identity as an artist.<\/p>\n<figure His work of art is titled &#8220;Outer Space.&#8221;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Graysen Dunn\u2019s parents and little sister escorted the Princess Anne Elementary second grader to the event. They applauded his \u201cOuter Space\u201d painting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s always had attention to detail,\u201d said his father, Garrett Dunn.<\/p>\n<p>VBCPS Visual Fine Arts Coordinator Amber Hester welcomed attendees. Janai\u2019s self-portrait is on display with about 250 other student artworks through March 26.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>She introduced director of K-12 and Gifted Programs Crystal Wilkerson, who congratulated the honorees and commended art teachers for nurturing the next generation of artists.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cArt is a fundamental experience that enriches our lives,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Grace Miller\u2019s acrylic painting of her sister, titled \u201cMy Hazel,\u201d was also part of the student art show.<\/p>\n<p>The Kellam High School senior plans to study studio art and finance at Virginia Tech this fall. She credited her VBCPS art teachers with inspiring her along the way, especially her current art teacher, Laura Peters.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe has helped me a lot with technique and encouraged me to challenge myself,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Janai Jones\u2019 grandmother congratulated the third grade Indian Lakes Elementary artist with a bouquet of flowers. Janai\u2019s self-portrait was part of the show.
