Putting on pajamas usually means getting ready for bed. But for some Pembroke Elementary students, it meant heading back to school.<\/p>\n

Reading specialist Amy Paulson was thrilled with the turnout at the pajama party-themed \u201cLiteracy Night\u201d on Feb. 28.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s great to have opportunities to share literacy activities with families,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Principal Beth Bianchi said they were happy to bring back the event, which was last held in early 2020 before the pandemic.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are glad to get the community back into the building, and excited to promote literacy and share the enjoyment of reading,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

The goal was also to provide parents helpful information and tools for reading with their children at home.<\/p>\n

While a book fair was going on in the library, the cafeteria was abuzz with pajama-clad kids and families mingling and enjoying activities designed by the school\u2019s literacy action team.<\/p>\n

Each grade level hosted an activity and plenty of valuable information was shared by Early Childhood Special Education (ECSE) and English as a Second Language (ESL).<\/p>\n

The school\u2019s \u201cExceptional Mustangs\u201d offered some adapted literacy activities that use communication devices and resources, and the Virginia Beach Public Library offered free library cards.\u00a0 The PTA gave away lots of prizes from local businesses.<\/p>\n

Callahan Smrz and his grandmother Margie Smrz attended the event. The first grader said he liked coming to school in his pj\u2019s. \u00a0First grade teacher Hayley Whitlock helped him practice \u201cheart words,\u201d such as \u201cdoes,\u201d \u201cgoes\u201d and \u201cthe.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThese words don\u2019t always follow the rules,\u201d she explained.<\/p>\n

Third grade teacher Rachel Ryan shared some comprehension strategies with parents. She provided a list of reading comprehension questions to ask, including those that begin with \u201cWhy did\u201d and \u201cHow did.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSometimes parents need to know simple questions to ask when reading with children,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Fourth-grader Gabriel Urmeneta, dressed in \u201cElf on the Shelf\u201d pajamas, concentrated on coloring a bookmark as his mother and two younger brothers watched. Heather Urmeneta said she takes her children regularly to the public library.<\/p>\n

\u201cReading is important for yourself, your mind, your soul,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Kayani Gray, 6, looked comfortable in her hooded pajamas as she read the book \u201cCat-Tastic Camera Adventure!\u201d at the kindergarten \u201cStop, Drop, and Read\u201d area on the cafeteria stage.<\/p>\n

Her mother Keshara Carter said she\u2019s read with Kayani since she was 2 years old.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are big on reading,\u201d she said. \u201cWe try to read every chance we get.\u201d<\/p>\n

Carter had some advice for improving reading skills.<\/p>\n

\u201cRead to your children,\u201d she said. \u201cIt works!\u201d<\/p>\n
