When fourth grader Michael Malnati found out his school division had its own food truck, he was immediately interested in having Thoroughgood Elementary host a tasting event for his fellow students.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>\u201cHow exciting that Michael wanted to meet with our department to explore our scratch cooking efforts as his Passion Project,\u201d Office of Food Services Chef Rachel Amato said, referring to his Passion Project. This project was developed out of his strong interest in food waste in schools. Michael believed more scratch meal options can prevent food waste.<\/p>\n

Principal Micah DeLoatch and gifted resource teacher Terri Darnell were completely onboard.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe can\u2019t wait!\u201d DeLoatch exclaimed.<\/p>\n

Amato and Michael discussed several thoughts on how to carry out the event. Students were surveyed to find out their favorite foods. Loaded tater tots were selected as the scratch lunch to sample at Thoroughgood.<\/p>\n

Michael jumped around the house with joy and anticipation for the big day \u2014 June 15.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Amato enlisted Michael to help pass out samples of the from-scratch meals Virginia Beach City Public Schools is spreading to all its menus. Students filled out tasting sheets to give additional feedback. Michael received special permission to attend the lunch periods for all grade levels as part of his work study experience.<\/p>\n

Michael\u2019s mom, Liz Malnati, was thankful that school and division staff supported her son\u2019s endeavor.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat an amazing and wonderful opportunity,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
