Pinocchio learns that going to school and doing his homework is part of realizing his dreams.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re socializing kids to live performances and incorporating literacy,\u201d said Michael Williams, executive director of the Tidewater Winds. Next fall, the group may perform \u201cThe Little Prince\u201d for Chesapeake and Norfolk students.<\/p>\n<p>John Brewington, VBCPS performing arts coordinator, began working on the project three years ago during the onset of the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/IMG_9409-scaled.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-11238\" src=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/IMG_9409-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/IMG_9409-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/IMG_9409-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/IMG_9409-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/IMG_9409-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/IMG_9409-2048x1365.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/IMG_9409-400x267.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>\u201cWe were all working from home, meeting with staff on Zoom and drawing up emergency lesson plans,\u201d he said. \u201cInstead of getting depressed, I got motivated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>David Messick of Rainbow Puppets rewrote the original Pinocchio story by Carlo Collodi, and worked with Brewington to create a cleaner, more direct, story line. The resulting book was given to all of the third-grade audience members.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKids have the book,\u201d Brewington said. \u201cWe wanted them to read the story before the show.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The book\u2019s appendices describe the pieces of a concert band and the difference between string puppets and hand \u2014 or \u201cbig mouth\u201d \u2014 puppets.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is also one of the most unique puppet versions of the show,\u201d Messick said, \u201cbecause it is told with a very limited number of marionette (string) puppets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The plan is to make the performance an annual event for VBCPS students.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/IMG_9471-scaled.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-11240\" src=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/IMG_9471-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/IMG_9471-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/IMG_9471-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/IMG_9471-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/IMG_9471-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/IMG_9471-2048x1365.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/IMG_9471-400x267.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>\u201cThird graders are so impressionable,\u201d Brewington said. \u201cThey\u2019re open to learning about character, and they love a good story. A rising tide lifts all boats, so they also learn about music and reading, all while having fun.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Because of the pandemic, the Sandler Center performance was for many students their first field trip and the first time they were inside a professional performance hall.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy students were mesmerized,\u201d said Sarah Fagan, music specialist at Pembroke Elementary. \u201cThey loved it, and so did the teachers!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And the learning didn\u2019t end with the show. Students raised their hands in agreement, then listened to musicians perform part of the score.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was the overture,\u201d Brewington explained. He invited student volunteers to play maracas while Williams had the cricket puppet from the show buzz around and make funny faces.<\/p>\n<p>The students then split up into rotating small groups, where Brewington conducted them with a baton, Barrett encouraged them to play out their own story for the local news, Williams explained more about puppets and performance, and Tidewater Winds members reviewed the musical instrument families.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/IMG_0147-scaled.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-11244\" src=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/IMG_0147-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/IMG_0147-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/IMG_0147-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/IMG_0147-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/IMG_0147-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/IMG_0147-2048x1365.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/IMG_0147-400x267.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Students were able to handle clarinets and a snare drum, try their hand with the puppets, and practice simple rhythms by clapping to a conductor\u2019s signals.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is this stick?\u201d Brewington asked one of the groups.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA baton!\u201d one student answered. Students discussed woodwinds, brass, percussion and string instruments, and how a good story has a beginning, middle and end.<\/p>\n<p>Brookwood music teacher Joy Stasiuk said the Sandler Center performance and in-school workshop helped bring alive lessons about musical instruments, the elements of a story and more.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe experienced the story of Pinocchio and had interactive experiences with the students,\u201d Stasiuk said. \u201cIt made it more relevant when the students were able to see the Tidewater Winds perform.
