He was not a passing visitor, he was back to stay \u2013 this time as principal. Little did he know he would soon be in the spotlight. Before he could savor the success of his return, Furlich was announced as the Elementary Administrator of the Year by Superintendent Aaron Spence during the division\u2019s leadership conference in August. Dey where he was named Teacher of the Year in 1997 and where he has now returned as principal. His career spans over 30 years in the division, and it has come full circle \u2013 he is now back at the school where he began his career as a fifth grade teacher. He continues to make the academic needs of his students his daily priority.<\/p>\n<p>During his announcement, Dr. Spence said that aside from nurturing student growth, Furlich also cares deeply about the advancement of his colleagues. He has mentored\u00a0many of our current principals and has seen five of his assistant principals go on to become principals themselves.<\/p>\n<p><a style=\"color: #339900; outline: 0px;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/furlich-at-his-class-1990s.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-10602 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/furlich-at-his-class-1990s-220x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"220\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/furlich-at-his-class-1990s-220x300.png 220w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/furlich-at-his-class-1990s-750x1024.png 750w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/furlich-at-his-class-1990s-768x1049.png 768w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/furlich-at-his-class-1990s-400x546.png 400w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/furlich-at-his-class-1990s.png 914w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 220px) 100vw, 220px\" \/><\/a>For more than 15 years, Furlich and Krista Barton-Arnold penned the Virginia Beach Association of Elementary School Principals\u2019\u00a0newsletter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were the voices of our peers during difficult times,\u201d said Barton-Arnold. \u201cWe aired struggles, joys and grievances. We pushed each other to be vulnerable, to take chances and to make it count. His willingness to share his struggles opened up so many doors and conversations with our colleagues.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Furlich has a reputation for taking good care of his staff, especially their social and emotional well-being.
