What is better than a vending machine filled with snacks? How about one filled with delectable books?\u00a0 In the summer of 2021, Rosemont Elementary School students got a special treat when they returned to school: a book vending machine.<\/p>\n

“The book vending machine is a focal point in our school\u2019s lobby \u2013 standing tall and proud, just like our Rosemont learners,\u201d said Kerry Zeltmann, kindergarten teacher.<\/p>\n

There are 21 slots for different books, which differ in reading level and interest. And there is a great selection for all grade levels. Some of the literary treats featured now are: \u201cFancy Nancy and the Delectable Cupcakes,\u201d \u201cBecause of Winn-Dixie,\u201d \u201cBiscuit Goes to School,\u201d \u201cFive Brilliant Scientists\u201d and many others.<\/p>\n

Rather than money, students receive a gold coin to “purchase” a book of their choice. They can earn gold coins for good behavior, scholastic achievements or as fourth-grader Sophia Roth put it: for getting caught being good.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur vending machine is a hit,\u201d said Technology Support Technician Leslie Elfelt.<\/p>\n

What better way to reward students and spark their love of reading?<\/p>\n

\u201cAt one point, I had four golden coins saved up in my backpack,\u201d said Roth. \u201cI was waiting for just the right time to use them. I felt so excited when I got the books I like!”<\/p>\n

The school restocks the machine with books procured with Title I funds, primarily. The principal and the reading specialists make the selections. And the maintenance of the machine isn\u2019t difficult either. If a book is “caught up,” the office staff has a key and can retrieve it.<\/p>\n

These beaming students worked hard and are ready to exchange their tokens for their favorite books. What a fantastic way to inspire good behavior, good grades and perhaps spark excitement to reading books!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

This is the seventh book vending machine in the district\u2019s Title I schools. Although it takes some time to complete the procurement process and to customize the vending machine to meet the expectations of the school, purchasing a book vending machine is always a possibility, according to Laura Silverman, director of Title I programs. If Title I schools are interested in purchasing vending machines, Silverman\u2019s office will assist them to navigate through the process.<\/p>\n

\u201cYES, we can make it happen,\u201d said Silverman. \u201cThe Title I office is happy to serve schools interested in taking the next step,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n

The program’s success is palpable: The machine has given out nearly 300 books \u2013 delightful literary treats for young readers.<\/p>\n
