Dozens of volunteers descended on Bayside Sixth Grade Campus one day this summer to spruce up the school for the arrival of students and teachers.<\/p>\n

Wearing red \u201cServe Day\u201d T-shirts, children and adults mulched the gardens, power-washed the picnic tables and filled backpacks with school supplies for each of Bayside\u2019s 350 sixth-graders.<\/p>\n

Bayside Sixth Grade Campus Principal Shampriest Bevel appreciates all the help from Wave City Care.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

\u201cIf they didn\u2019t come to help, it would have been just admin and the office staff doing all this,\u201d said Principal Shampriest Bevel, smiling at all the volunteers in the school cafeteria who were packing pens, notebooks and other supplies.<\/p>\n

Wavy City Care is a locally based nonprofit that sent about 500 volunteers to help schools and charities in Virginia and North Carolina on Aug. 21.<\/p>\n

\u201cEvery time I look up, there\u2019s more people,\u201d Bevel said. \u201cI love it!\u201d<\/p>\n

Wave City Care gets its named from Wave Church, the nonprofit\u2019s largest supporter. Volunteer Julianna Brostrom said outreach is an important part of her faith.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think it\u2019s cool we\u2019re not just inside the church,\u201d Brostrom said while assembling back-to-school binders with Mikayla Masteller. \u201cIt\u2019s good for a church to be out in the community.\u201d<\/p>\n

Literacy teacher Kenya Smith was thrilled to have volunteers help her set up her classroom, and volunteer Jenny Rowan was more than happy to help.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m so honored to be here,\u201d Rowan said. \u201cI have four kids in the school system, and I know how hard teachers work. It\u2019s nice to be able to give something back.\u201d<\/p>\n

Outside the building, volunteers were busy trimming bushes and cleaning outdoor equipment to make everything look nice for returning students.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith the kids coming back soon, it\u2019s great that we can help get things clean and sanitized,\u201d said Wave City Care Vice President James Shupert. Businesses joined in the effort: Nature\u2019s Edge provided landscaping while Squared Away Cleaning and KD\u2019s Pressure Washing provided equipment and manpower. Many of the volunteers were parents who brought their children along \u2013 and vice-versa.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a family thing,\u201d Shupert said.<\/p>\n

Bevel said the team\u2019s generous spirit really helped her kick off the school year on a positive note.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor them to say, \u2018Whatever you need, we\u2019ll be there\u2019 \u2013 it\u2019s just been a big gift,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
