{"id":10084,"date":"2021-05-10T10:30:24","date_gmt":"2021-05-10T14:30:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/?p=10084"},"modified":"2021-05-26T14:36:18","modified_gmt":"2021-05-26T18:36:18","slug":"personalized-professional-learning-building-competence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/personalized-professional-learning-building-competence\/","title":{"rendered":"Personalized professional learning \u2013 building competence"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When Margaret Wilson read about the division\u2019s Learning Specializations in her school\u2019s newsletter, she saw it as a flexible form of professional learning.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_10085\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10085\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/wilson.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-10085\" src=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/wilson-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"&quot;&quot;\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/wilson-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/wilson-400x266.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/wilson.jpg 646w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-10085\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Margaret Wilson<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cI loved that I could [learn] on my own time,\u201d said Wilson, who teaches AVID at Salem High. \u201cI didn\u2019t have to go to a conference or stay after school to attend meetings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Learning Specializations help teachers develop and receive recognition for skills they learned formally and informally.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey are a personalized, self-paced, job-embedded form of professional learning that are taking root nationwide,\u201d said Chelyse Miller, professional learning specialist in the Office of Professional Growth and Innovation. \u201cOur Learning Specializations recognize recipients for having proven competency in areas of teaching and leading.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Learning Specializations support one of the strategies of <a href=\"http:\/\/www2.vbschools.com\/compass\/2020\/content\/pdfs\/Compassto2025.pdf\">Compass to 2025<\/a>: \u201cprovide a variety of personalized professional learning opportunities to all staff to support their professional growth.\u201d Teachers create their own learning path and document their competence through artifacts.<\/p>\n<p>VBCPS offers the following learning specializations:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Culturally Responsive Practices<\/li>\n<li>Language Literacy<\/li>\n<li>Performance-based Assessment<\/li>\n<li>Personalized Learning<\/li>\n<li>Professional Learning Leader<\/li>\n<li>Recognizing and Understanding Gifted Learners<\/li>\n<li>Team Leader<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Since the introduction of Learning Specializations in spring 2016, teachers have earned 74 Badges, 104 Master Badges and 13 Specializations.<\/p>\n<p>The Performance-based Assessment Specialization helped Wilson improve the rubrics she uses to help students measure strengths and areas that need improvement. For example, she developed a specific rubric for an exercise where students used an online database to research how well their skills match up with different career paths. They then created a plan to move forward by choosing classes and researching colleges and universities offering majors that aligned with their career goals.<\/p>\n<p>Wilson and one of her peers at Salem, Victoria Marie Finnegan-Copen, talked about their progress while pursuing Learning Specializations. They also received support and encouragement from Katie Cirilli, coordinator for K-12 programs and grants in the Department of Teaching and Learning.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe feedback cycle and collaboration were especially valuable,\u201d Wilson said.<\/p>\n<p>Ashley Rankin, a language arts teacher at Centerville Elementary, earned a Culture and Community badge by demonstrating she could regularly incorporate student input and decision-making in her classroom community. For example, her fifth graders decorated their notebooks with pictures from home and phrases that represent their interests. All the while, the learning specialization process helped Nobles at his own goal setting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt required something of me in a good way,\u201d said Nobles, who teaches eighth-grade civics and economics. \u201cI could set goals for myself. And I could do the learning that was necessary to meet those goals.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The internal sense of pride and accomplishment in doing something that benefits students is the greatest incentive. In addition, engaging in Learning Specializations provides teachers:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>license renewal points<\/li>\n<li>digital badge to include on resumes and on professional social media sites such as LinkedIn<\/li>\n<li>a tangible, self-adhesive badge<\/li>\n<li>evidence for Career Teacher application,<\/li>\n<li>letter of commendation for the teacher\u2019s file<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Teachers can pursue one or multiple badges at a time and build their collection within a learning specialization. Learning Specializations is a type of professional learning that gives teachers the freedom to choose what they need, when they need it, and whether they want recognition for their learning.<\/p>\n<p>Additional specializations are in development.<\/p>\n<p>Rankin said the program made her think of additional career goals.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m thinking about seeking National Board certification,\u201d she said. \u201cI hope this is a steppingstone onto other things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>VBCPS educators who are interested in learning more about specializations are encouraged to
