Former Virginia Beach City Public Schools principal J. Wylie French was surrounded by friends, family and supporters at his recent induction into the Virginia High School Hall of Fame. The 25th induction ceremony took place on Oct. 15 in Charlottesville. According to the Virginia High School League, the Hall of Fame “recognizes those who have contributed in outstanding ways to activities programs serving Virginia’s youth.”

French served as the principal at Frank W. Cox and Kempsville high schools, before going on to open both Green Run High School (in 1979) and Salem High School (in 1989). French also later served in the VBCPS central office.

In addition to his support of all things academic, French served as the first chair of the Beach District as it was established in 1975. A former three-star athlete himself at Norview High School, French was instrumental in hosting multitudes of state VHSL tournaments and championships at marquee facilities throughout Hampton Roads and advocated passionately for equality under Title IX.
