The Department of Human Resources recently welcomed 224 students from the Virginia’s Teachers for Tomorrow (VTfT) program to the school administration building.
VTfT is designed to inspire high school students to return to the classroom as teachers by exposing them to a world-class curriculum and hands-on experience through field trips, guest speakers and classroom observation.

During their time with the Department of Human Resources, Virginia Beach students were given examples on the rewards of a career in education, received an official ID badge to wear and were offered congratulations from the school division for choosing teaching as a future career.
The enthusiasm for the program continues to grow here in Virginia Beach. Last year, 230 aspiring teachers participated in welcome sessions for students and, this year, 60 students are continuing in the second level of the program.

The program, which has been operating for the past five years, is designed with the hope that many of these students will return to Virginia Beach in future years as employees. Through the VBCPS Future Teacher Award, which is based on principal recommendation, Virginia Beach may offer preliminary job contracts to up to two outstanding graduating students at each of the high schools offering the program (provided they earn the right degrees, certifications and grades, and if there is the available budget when they graduate).
This year, VBCPS officially hired the first two VBCPS Future Teacher Award Winners.
Sarah Read, a fifth grade teacher at North Landing Elementary School, credits her experience with VTfT with preparing her to take on the challenges of a first year teacher.
“Ever since my senior year in high school, as part of the first graduating class of Virginia Teachers for Tomorrow, I have known with absolute certainty that I want to be a teacher,” Read said. “VTfT gave me the chance to realize that early on, and I have spent the past four years working hard to achieve that dream. VTfT is an incredible opportunity, and I am very lucky to have been able to participate in and graduate as part of the first class of the program.”
