At its meeting Tuesday night, the Virginia Beach School Board approved the final employee contribution to the Virginia Retirement System (VRS) for all employees. This means that all staff members in the division will be contributing five percent of their salaries to the VRS beginning July 1.
This latest action is in addition to the School Board approving the 3.34 percent salary increase for all staff members. Staff will receive two percent of this raise beginning July 1, and the additional 1.34 percent Dec. 1.

If the General Assembly had done over the last 20 years what it so blithely and paternalistically recommends to its employees–that they discipline themselves to contribute the appropriate amount each period–this would not have been remotely necessary. A promise made a generation ago to teachers and other state-affiliated employees has been pitched aside for political and monetary convenience.
