Meg Manugo, teacher of English and Virginia Teachers for Tomorrow at Bayside High School, has been selected by Educators Rising as one of 12 educational professionals nationwide to serve on its Standards Committee. According to Educators Rising’s press release, committee members will be “tasked with developing Educators Rising Standards for what secondary students should know and be able to do in order to be on a coherent path to accomplished teaching.”
Educators Rising is affiliated with Phi Delta Kappa (PDK) International, a professional network of education leaders, and its mission is to “cultivate highly-skilled educators by guiding young people on a path to becoming accomplished teachers, beginning in high school and extending through college and into the profession.”
Manugo is one of eight National Board Certified Teachers (NBCT) on the committee, which also includes six National Education Association (NEA) members and two state Teachers of the Year. The Standards Committee will meet four times between February 2016 and May 2016 to develop the standards and publish them in May 2016.
Educators Rising Co-Director Dan Brown is quoted in the related press release as saying, “This is groundbreaking work for a strong front end of the teaching pipeline. Over 60 percent of teachers teach within 20 miles of where they went to high school, which makes it vital for every community to invest in growing their own great teachers today. Educators Rising standards, coming from the profession and for the profession, will provide clarity on how to start that crucial work early.”
