After being closed much of last school year off for renovations, the VBCPS Planetarium is back and ready for your students.
Having been an integral part of the Virginia Beach school system since it was built in 1969, the planetarium has welcomed hundreds of thousands of students through its doors.
The planetarium’s technical capabilities were extremely outdated. In fact, up until this school year, the planetarium was operating with the same optical-mechanical projection system installed more than 44 years ago.
In fall 2012, the planetarium underwent a complete renovation: a new, state-of-the-art projection system was installed; a chronological mural depicting historically significant astronomical events was painted around the planetarium’s interior; the building’s massive dome was repainted; and other features were upgraded as well.
This year, the planetarium is ready to show off its new duds.
Just as in the past, planetarium coordinator Charles Dibbs is at the ready to customize the planetarium’s capabilities with your class’s curriculum. Whether it be Space Science, Spanish, or even Art History, the planetarium can catapult your lessons to make a more engaging, interactive and impactful experience for students.
To schedule a field trip to the Planetarium, call Dibbs at 648-4940 or email him directly at Charles.Dibbs@vbschools.com.

Yeah!
I am happy to hear of the up grade. I do not teach but I have visited before when it was opened to the public. Will it still be opened for the public and if so, what would be the days and hours we could visit. Thank you.
I visited the planetarium in 1969 probably eight grade year in high school at Kellam.
Really felt fortunate to have such get facility in Virginia Beach. Did think I was hot stuff not ever having a Junior High School experience. My brother spent only a year at Plaza then came right back to Kellam
We took our Rosemont Elementary fourth grade students to the Planetarium last week. AWESOME!!! Every fourth grader in the city should get the experience. Mr. Dibbs ROCKS!!
