Headlines 2014-15: Virginia Beach staff in the news

Check out the following staff members who have authored or been featured in recent publications:

  • Ocean Lakes High School principal Dr. Cheryl Askew and former Citywide Teacher of the Year Carrie Gantt were featured in the latest Regent University publication, Impact.
  • VBCPS Sustainability Officer Tim Cole co-authored a chapter in a recently published book, “Marketing the Green School: Form, Function, and the Future.” Click here to read the chapter, titled “Enhancing Building Performance and Environmental Learning: A case Study of Virginia Beach City Public Schools
  • Cox High School special education teacher Morghan Bosch, along with mother, Karen Bosch, officially published a book, The First Year Teacher. The book itself is a guide for new teachers and features instruction techniques as well as suggestions, ideas and advice for starting a successful teaching career.
  • Landstown Middle School’s Sue Bailey, Linkhorn Park Elementary School’s Aubrey Sprague and Princess Anne High School’s Camilla Walck were named Top Teachers by Coastal Virginia magazine. In addition, Kellam High School was named a Standout School. Ocean Lakes High School was on honorable mention.
  • Reid Baker, seventh-grade English teacher at Salem Middle School, had one of his portfolio entries for National Board Certification selected for inclusion in ATLAS, an online resource that will showcase accomplished teachers in action.
  • Glenwood Elementary’s librarian, Tammie Soccio, was published in VAASL Voice (Virginia Association of School Librarians). Her article entitled “Selling Books” can be found on page 35 of the Winter 2015 issue.
  • In the spirit of advocacy on behalf of public education throughout the Commonwealth and across the nation, Dr. Brian Matney, principal of Landstown High School: Governor’s STEM & Technology Academy, was part of a Virginia contingent recently highlighted by the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) NewsLeader magazine. In honoring Virginia Association of Secondary School Principals (VASSP) executive director Dr. Randy Barrack as its March 2015 Advocate of the Month, the Virginia team was cited for being active in promoting “the state’s educational future, education priorities in the General Assembly, and federal ESEA reauthorization.”
  • Tim Cole, sustainability officer for VBCPS, wrote the article, “Why Sustainability Makes Good Economic Sense” for the March 2015 edition of School Business Affairs magazine.
