Green Run Collegiate to hold teacher information sessions

Teachers, are you looking to get in on the ground floor of a unique opportunity? Find out more by attending an information session designed to introduce teachers to the first public charter school in Virginia Beach, Green Run Collegiate, a school focusing on college preparation.

Information sessions have been scheduled for teachers interested in being part of a groundbreaking opportunity at Green Run Collegiate (GRC), a public charter school focusing on college preparation. The sessions are set for Wednesday, May 8 at Green Run High School. There will be two sessions, 4 – 4:30 p.m. for high school teachers and 5 – 5:30 p.m. for middle school teachers.

In addition, a live online chat session has been scheduled to answer questions from teachers wanting to learn more about this unique opportunity. The live online chat is set for Thursday, May 9, from 5:30 – 6:30 p.m.

Individuals selected to fill teacher-facilitator positions at GRC will be expected to possess current teacher certification in IB and AVID or be willing to attend training. IB training is in Atlanta June 17 -20, 2013 with AVID training scheduled in July.

GRC is the first public charter school approved by the Virginia Beach School Board. A public charter school is an independent public school allowed to be more innovative and flexible while still held accountable by the school division for improving student achievement. For example, such flexibility could include offering different curriculum, developing a unique school calendar and holding classes outside of the traditional school day. While a public charter must be approved by the School Board, the responsibility for staffing and oversight of day to day operations will be guided by the GRC Governing Board.

GRC will be housed on the Green Run High School campus and is open to rising ninth grade students who live in Virginia Beach. GRC will feature an academically challenging college preparatory experience offering International Baccalaureate (IB) courses; IB Middle Years Program, IB Diploma and IB Career-related Certificate. The Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) system will also be implemented to provide additional support for student success. UP to 100 ninth graders will comprise GRC’s first class in September 2013. One grade level will be added per year until the charter program reaches its full capacity of 400 students in grades nine – 12 at the start of the 2016-17 school year.

Student enrollment is currently underway. Should there be more than 100 students interested in attending GRC, an open lottery will be held Tuesday, May 14.
