French added to VHSL Hall of Fame

The Virginia High School League (VHSL) has announced that long-time Beach administrator, J. Wylie French, will be inducted into the VHSL Hall of Fame this year for his achievements in 45 years of service.

French served as the principal at Frank W. Cox and Kempsville high schools, before going on to open both Green Run High School (in 1979) and Salem High School (in 1989).  French also later served in the VBCPS central office.

In addition to his support of all things academic, French served as the first chair of the Beach District as it was established in 1975. A former three-star athlete himself at Norview High School, French was instrumental in hosting multitudes of state VHSL tournaments and championships at marquee facilities throughout Hampton Roads and advocated passionately for equality under Title IX.

French, who just celebrated his 80th birthday this past fall, enters the Hall as a contributor to student activities and will be inducted during the League’s annual fall meeting Oct. 15 in Charlottesville, Va.
