When it comes to earning some extra cash, one VBCPS staff member is “game.”
Courtney Bennis, a data support specialist at Old Donation Center, took center stage and took home $13,050 during an episode of the popular television game show, “Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?”
“It’s just been a whirlwind of a summer,” Bennis said
Back in July, Bennis was driving to work when the radio announced open tryouts for “Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?” at MacArthur Mall. Since she had Fridays off, Bennis decided it would be worth a shot.

“It was something to do,” Bennis said. “I’ve always had a good memory, and when I was in school I was reading all the time. Now, I’d be able to put all the random things I’ve been reading over the years to good use.”
In the morning of the tryout, there was a multiple choice test. For those who passed the test, the next hurdle was a personal interview with producers. Then, if that went well, the day ended with a screen test. Three weeks later, Bennis received a call telling her she had been selected to compete.
In mid-August, Bennis went up to New York to tape her segment. And, this would be comfortable territory. While in high school, Bennis competed on “Teen Jeopardy”.
“I’d been through this before, so I knew what to expect,” Bennis said.
Throughout the production, Bennis said the staff, crew and especially host Meredith Vieira were warm and welcoming.
“She is just the most amazing person in the world. I love her,” Bennis said. “She was coming up and giving you a hug when it’s done.”
Due to contractual agreements, Bennis was not allowed to disclose how she fared on the show until it aired this morning. However, Bennis did say – regardless of how she did – the whole process was well worth a day at the mall.
“It’s fun. You’re talking and meeting other people from around the country,” she said. “It’s really awesome.”
