Back-to-school bulletin boards, breakfasts, neighborhoods visits and even yoga were just some of the images shared by school media liaisons and staff members this week to highlight VBCPS employees’ work and fun as they prepared for the first day of school.

Woodstock Elementary School teachers are stepping into the new school year with “pencil shoes.” Teachers Avery Horton, Beth Kelly, Roseanne Jacob, and Christine Marcus decorated plain yellow sneakers to look like wooden pencils after seeing the idea on social media. The teachers plan to wear their pencil shoes on the first day of school and other special occasions.

Faculty and staff at Glenwood Elementary School arrived at “Camp Glenwood” for teacher workweek. They participated in various camp activities and learned archery (to enhance their understanding of how students feel learning something new). Their week at Camp Glenwood ended with a cool visit from Kona Ice.

Thanks to Adult Learning Center office associate Bonnie Flora, staff from radio station 2WD 101.3 FM delivered lunch to the ALC Aug. 30. Flora entered a radio station contest and her name was drawn for the prize of six pizzas from Salvatore’s Pizzeria.

Rosemont Forest Elementary School teachers were welcomed back with this awesome sidewalk message created by library media specialist Michelle Kovaks and kindergarten teacher Micki Blevins.

How do you get to know your students? You visit the neighborhoods in which they live! Linkhorn Park Elementary School teachers rode bicycles through the neighborhoods of their school zone and visited the bus stops their students go to each day.

Green Run Collegiate teachers Katelyn Ready and Dana Fariss are encouraging a growth mindset with their classroom bulletin board.

Larkspur Middle School sixth grade teachers Emily Joyner, Troy Darwin and Erika Heller started off their morning with yoga.

Cooke Elementary School teachers worked their way through BreakoutEDU, an open-ended problem-solving activity for students that promotes teamwork and can be used in all content areas. Similar to the concept of the local Escape Room, participants have to decipher clues to remove multiple locks from a box that contains the answer they’re seeking. Cooke purchased the classroom escape games with a Virginia Beach Education Foundation innovative learning grant it was awarded in the spring.

A student-filled spirit tunnel warmly welcomed Brickell Academy at Old Donation School staff on the first day of teacher in-service week.

Bettie F. Williams Elementary School staff celebrated the projection of the school’s full SOL accreditation for 2016-17 with a flag-raising ceremony Aug. 29.

The administrative teams at Kellam High School and Ocean Lakes High School cooked and served breakfast for their respective staffs or “staffulty,” as Ocean Lakes principal Claire LeBlanc refers to her staff-faculty.

Pre-kindergarten resource teachers Amy Carroll and Karen Kagel welcomed parents to orientation sessions hosted by the division’s Title I program Aug. 30. VBCPS has pre-kindergarten classrooms in 20 school sites this year.

Princess Anne High School’s SCA welcomed back staff by hosting a breakfast with an Olympics theme.

The faculty and staff at Rosemont Elementary School are “Going for Gold” this year. To spread the word that “We are all Champions!” and to motivate and encourage Rosemont students, staff visited area neighborhoods Aug. 30 from 6-8 p.m. “Home visits are a fun way to forge a strong relationship with our families and build excitement for the school year. There’s no place like home,” said principal Cari Hall.

Rosemont Forest Elementary School teacher Brad Ward and professional learning specialist Bevin Reinen received an orientation at NAS Oceana Aug. 30 for their Blue Angels flight next week. They were selected to be guest riders in the F/A-18 Hornets when the Blue Angels are in Virginia Beach for the annual NAS Oceana Air Show Sept. 9-11.

The green screen in Creeds Elementary School’s media center makerspace was completed this week. Creeds principal Casey Conger demonstrated how it works: one minute she’s standing in front green wall, and the next minute she’s a fan at Busch Stadium cheering on the St. Louis Cardinals. Students will be fans of this new space when they return to school Sept. 6.

Office of Programs for Exceptional Children (OPEC) staff who work in the Laskin Road Annex gathered for a welcome session that followed up on the excitement of the 2016 Summer Olympics. Ten different departments showed their team spirit for OPEC 2016 in fun and creative events, such as competitive scissor racing, the decathlon and rhythmic gymnastics. Teams received high marks for their exceptional efforts!

Luxford Elementary School teachers were eager to welcome students at their Meet and Greet Sept. 1, and everyone was excited for the ice cream social hosted by the Luxford Elementary School PTA. Thank you, Doumar’s!

Also at Luxford Elementary School’s Meet and Greet were three generations of Luxford students who all have had the good fortune of being taught by PE teacher Adline Hale.
