New name and new logo for Virginia Beach Digital Campus

When Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS) created its online learning program about 12 years ago, it was named “Virtual Virginia Beach e-Learning.”

Fast forward a few years later, and the state of Virginia unveiled a new online program, which would offer online Advanced Placement (AP), world language, core academic and elective courses to students across the Commonwealth.

It was named “Virtual Virginia.”

With only two words distinguishing the two entities, VBCPS invited Advanced Technology Center digital design students to partake in a re-branding/logo design project—something that Lee Troxell’s class often does throughout the year to provide students with real-world experience.

They developed 15 names and logos and presented them in a formal professional setting to a team of five judges from the Department of Teaching and Learning.

Students not only developed logos and names, but also created mock-ups showing how their proposals would look when integrated onto the VBCPS Distance Learning Program web page on vbschools.com.

“Mr. Troxell presented this as a ‘clean sheet’ experience, meaning that there were no limitations to their creativity and conception,” said VBCPS Distance Learning Coordinator Bruce Harrison.

Logo winner

In the end, the selected logo was created by Destiny Moody, a senior at Green Run High School. In her presentation, Moody made clear that her concept was a wave representing both Virginia Beach and a pathway that leads into the distance.

“Destiny was clear that a path that leads to the future is exactly what education is all about for students,” Harrison added.

Virginia Beach Digital Campus, the new name of the program, will be phased in starting in the 2016-2017 school year. Both the logo and name will appear on internal and external websites, documents, forms and communications for the program, which serves approximately 1,400 students each year during summer school and the regular school year.

“The new name and logo reflect the aspiration and the reality of the online program in Virginia Beach,” said Harrison. “We are excited that this creative work by a Virginia Beach student will represent our program so well.”
