Recently, the staff at Newtown Elementary School took some time to celebrate. The  school had earned Distinguished Title I School Status by the Virginia Department of Education. The title was bestowed on just 55 of the Commonwealth’s more than 700 Title 1 schools. To earn the honor, schools had to meet all state and federal accountability requirements for two consecutive years and achieve reading and mathematics SOL pass rates at the 60th percentile or higher. Way to go!
