Citywide Teacher of the Year finalists announced

Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS) is celebrating the five finalists for 2020 Citywide Teacher of the Year! Through the continuing Great Dreams Need Great Teachers campaign, the division honors all its innovative and dedicated educators year-round, and each spring, VBCPS has the opportunity to recognize the best-of-the-best teachers throughout the division with the announcement of its finalists for VBCPS Citywide Teacher of the Year.

Congratulations to these educators for being selected as the five finalists for 2020 Citywide Teacher of the Year:

  • Nancy Julcher, special education teacher, Alanton Elementary School
  • Anthony Nobles, social studies teacher, Plaza Middle School
  • Rachel Thompson, International Baccalaureate (IB) Spanish teacher, Princess Anne High School
  • Rachel M. Thompson, health and physical education teacher, Old Donation School
  • Charlene Winley, kindergarten teacher, Holland Elementary School

The Teacher of the Year selection committee will interview each of the finalists and narrow the decision to one. That announcement will be made during the Teacher of the Year Dinner Thursday, May 2 hosted by the Virginia Beach Education Foundation.

  1. I am delighted to see Nancy Julcher as a finalist for the VBTOY!
I was fortunate a few years ago to be her SPED department chair. Her dedication and her caring demeanor were evident in every aspect of her student engagement. She exemplifies the professionalism that all VB special educators strive to achieve.
