VBCPS employees honored for decades of service

Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS) recognized the dedication of teachers and staff during the division’s “Celebration of Service,” a dinner hosted by the Department of Human Resources Thursday, Jan. 24, to honor staff members with 45, 40, 35, 30 and 25 years of service.

Jane McClellan and Linda Ditchburn have nearly 90 years of service between the two of them and were two of the 315 employees recognized at the annual event.

McClellan taught first-grade at Old Donation Elementary School in 1973. A year later, she joined the gifted education program. After years of teaching at different schools across the division, she is now back at Old Donation School as their counselor.

“I was the original elementary school counselor for Virginia Beach City Public Schools,” she said. “And, I started with the gifted program almost 44 years ago.”

McClellan advises fellow employees to have a growth mind-set. “The best compliment I ever received was ‘You have worked here a long time, but always stayed relevant.’ You always want to evolve with the times.”

Ditchburn, now a special education teacher at Great Neck Middle School, is thankful to the division for the opportunity to reinvent herself. Since she began working for VBCPS, she has held positions at the elementary, middle and high school levels.

“Never fear change,” states Ditchburn. “When you see an opportunity to maximize your learning and to better yourself, always take it.”

After seeing decades of change and 45 years of service to the division, is retirement on the horizon?

“Teaching keeps you young,” said Ditchburn.

Carl Diehl, Jr., a driver’s education teacher, began his career with VBCPS as a physical education teacher at Bayside High School in 1978. He plans to retire later this year. “After over 55 years both attending school here and then working here I’m finally saying goodbye,” he said. “I am going to miss a lot of people.”

Diehl was one of 12 employees at the event recognized for dedicating 40 years to the division.

This year’s 315 honorees listed below have a combined 8,870 years of service to VBCPS. View photos from the event on the VBSchools Facebook page.
