They might work across 86 schools and multiple buildings, but by the hugs, smiles and handshakes shared as they arrived for this year’s Custodian Convocation held at Salem High School, it was evident that the division’s 700 custodians have a unique bond.
“Our theme for the school year is one mission, one team,” said Director of Custodial Services Larry Ames who opened the event held in the school’s auditorium.
He then introduced Superintendent Dr. Aaron Spence who thanked them and emphasized that their work is more than just cleaning.
“I know you’re thinking, I’m just here to clean,” he said. “No. We are all here to make a difference in the lives of young people. As I think I’ve said before, if we don’t have a learning environment that works for teachers and a learning environment that works for students then we can’t get our job done. We appreciate everything that you do.”
