Tech Center’s HVAC program earns HVAC Excellence accreditation

The Virginia Beach Technical and Career Education Center is celebrating the news that its heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) program has been recommended for accreditation through HVAC Excellence. The center’s HVAC program will be the third high school program in Virginia with HVAC Excellence accreditation.

According to David Swanger, director of the Virginia Beach Technical and Career Education Center, in addition to the HVAC Excellence six-year accreditation, the center’s program received commendations for its strong SkillsUSA participation and support as well as its numerous quality teacher-prepared/developed skills trainers.

The website for ESCO Group, the organization that established HVAC Excellence in 1994 “to improve the technical competency of the Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration (HVACR) industry by offering programs to validate the technical education process,” describes the accreditation process as follows:

Programmatic accreditation is an independent third party review of an educational program. The process validates that established standards of excellence for HVACR educational programs are met. These standards are designed to ensure that our future workforce receives the quality of training required to provide the skills necessary for success in the HVACR industry. Accreditation standards require a thorough examination of: mission of program, administrational responsibilities, finances and funds, student services, instruction design and program elements, physical facilities, equipment and tools, cooperative training and instructor qualifications.

The HVAC program at the Virginia Beach Technical and Career Education Center is one of 22 credentialed programs available to Virginia Beach City Public Schools students in grades 11 and 12. More information about the center is available on its website

More information about the programmatic accreditation through HVAC Excellence and a list of accredited programs by state is available on the ESCO Group website.
