Green Run Collegiate (GRC) was awarded a $25,000 SkillsUSA Lowe’s Grant to support the expansion of its service learning garden. According to GRC staff, the service learning garden project will integrate the biology, Advancement via Individual Determination (AVID), and the International Baccalaureate curricula. During the interdisciplinary learning experience, students will learn how to build garden beds and a green house, work cooperatively and will give back to the community.
GRC students and staff plan to partner with the Technical and Career Education Center and the Advanced Technology Center to work on the garden expansion. The harvest from the expanded and improved garden will be sold in a local farmers market held in the Green Run community. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to Volunteer Hampton Roads, the organization that notified GRC of the grant opportunity. In addition to selling food from the garden, GRC students will sell T-shirts and rain barrels to raise funds to maintain the garden and continue its donations to Volunteer Hampton Roads.
