The school division’s occupational therapy staff held a celebration at the special education annex to recognize their colleagues, physical therapists, in honor of Physical Therapy Month.
In keeping with the celebration theme, “Our Physical Therapists are Swell,” the faces of all 13 physical therapy staff members were superimposed onto surfer images.
Lucy Leyden, physical therapy department chair, and Jane Debord, administrative coordinator for the office of programs for exceptional children, posed with a surfboard art project (on loan) created by Brooke Powers, a student in the Visual and Performing Arts Academy at Salem High School.
In addition to the swell decorations, occupational therapists collectively donated $210 to Surfer’s Healing, an organization that allows children with autism to experience surfing opportunities. According to the division’s occupational and physical therapists, allowing children to encounter waves, challenge themselves and try something new is often a calming and transformative experience for children, and many VBCPS students participate when the events are local.
