The sixth-graders in Suzanne Bruehl’s class at Great Neck Middle School (GNMS) were just about to begin group work when Superintendent Aaron Spence asked if he could interrupt the lesson led by gifted resource teacher Gabe Howard.
Spence wanted to share a letter about Howard submitted to the Great Dreams Need Great Teachers campaign by parent Elisabeth Scheuer.
“Mr. Howard is not only an outstanding teacher and soccer coach, but also a remarkable person who seamlessly demonstrates and instills the proper values and behaviors to his students,” Spence read aloud.
“Is that true?” Spence asked the students.
“Very!” responded one student.
Spence continued to read: “Mr. Howard’s gentle demeanor, disposition and sense of humor all create an environment that causes students to grow and thrive.”
“True?” asked Spence.
“Yes!” responded the class.
Scheuer’s letter also praised Howard’s innovative teaching methods, positivity, compassion, patience and communication skills.
“Definitely!” remarked one student after hearing Spence read all the qualities described in Scheuer’s letter.
After a hearty round of applause, Spence gave Howard a gift from Great Dreams Need Great Teachers campaign sponsor iFLY – a pass for free iFLY flights, just in time for the school division’s scheduled spring break.
