Finalists named for 2018 Citywide Teacher of the Year

In an email to all Virginia Beach City Public Schools employees Friday, March 10, Superintendent Dr. Aaron Spence announced the five finalists for the division’s 2018 Citywide Teacher of the Year.

“As our ongoing campaign says, ‘Great Dreams need Great Teachers.’ And, without a doubt, we have some of the most talented and committed educators in the nation working right here in our classrooms and schools,” he wrote.

Congratulations to the following teachers:

  • Sharon Byrd, Theatre Arts Teacher, Salem High School
  • Louis Castiglioni, Art Teacher, Landstown Elementary School
  • Jamey Lovin, Math Specialist, Plaza Middle School
  • Amanda Pontifex, Fifth-Grade Teacher, Shelton Park Elementary School
  • Stephanie Wyman, Fifth-Grade Teacher, Woodstock Elementary School

These finalists were selected from all of the individual schools’ Teachers of the Year named earlier this year.

The Teacher of the Year selection committee will interview each of the finalists during the next few weeks, and Spence will announce the committee’s decision during the Teacher of the Year Dinner hosted by the Virginia Beach Education Foundation May 4.

Congratulations to the five finalists and all of the schools’ Teachers of the Year!
