Welcome to Hugh Greene, the newest member of the Virginia Beach School Board!
Last night, at its Sept. 5 meeting, the School Board voted unanimously to appoint Hugh Greene to fill the vacant at-large School Board seat. The seat was vacated by Dr. Todd C. Davidson, who left the board on July 31 to pastor a church in Cleveland, Ohio.
At Wednesday night’s vote, Greene went from a seat of the audience to a seat on the dais immediately following the School Board’s vote.
Greene, an independent financial advisor, will serve on the board until an at-large School Board member is elected and qualified after the Nov. 6 special election. The person elected will hold office through December 2014, the remainder of Davidson’s original term.
School Board Chairman Daniel D. Edwards said Greene brings to the Board a depth of experience and passion for public education.
Greene has served in a variety of volunteer capacities with Virginia Beach Schools. Most recently he served a four-year stint as chairman of the division’s Community Advisory Committee on Gifted Education. He also has served on the Compass to 2015 Steering Committee and the Office of Gifted Education sub-committee on assessment and identification. In 2011, Greene was named Parent of the Year by the Virginia Association for the Gifted.
“I hope to continue my support for public education by offering my experience in volunteer roles that I have served in as an advocate for the interests of students and teachers,” Greene said.
Greene holds a bachelor’s degree in behavioral science from Antioch College. He currently serves as a facilitator with the Hampton Roads Urban League NULITES and the NSU Spartan Prep Academy. Greene also has served on the Mayor’s African American Roundtable and on the Board of Deacons for Mount Olive Baptist Church.
Greene has three children. His oldest son is a graduate of the Governor’s STEM and Technology Academy at Landstown High School. His daughter is a student at Kellam High School and his youngest son is a student at Princess Anne Middle School.Tell your friends! Follow us!
