FACT: Proactive practices – including Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) and mediation – help address disciplinary issues sooner and more efficiently.
Only a small percentage of VBCPS students are disciplined each year. Overall, less than 10 percent of the total student population are ever referred for administrative action. The vast majority of students are making the right choices in classrooms each and every day, which means that, on the whole, teachers and administrators are spending their time working on instruction and creating innovative academic experiences for children.
That said, when a disciplinary issue does arise, these new processes help identify and address issues sooner so that behaviors do not become a chronic problem in the classroom.
