The citywide winner will be announced at the Teacher of the Year dinner hosted by the Virginia Beach Education Foundation May 2.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Dr. Charlene Winley, a kindergarten teacher at Holland Elementary School, discovered she had a desire to teach after a successful career in social work.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/1student-003.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/1student-003-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-9170\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/1student-003-1024x683.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/1student-003-300x200.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/1student-003-768x512.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/1student-003-400x267.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a caseworker I saw the importance of teachers and education in a child\u2019s life,\u201d said Winley. \u201cMy road to becoming a teacher was birthed out of the desire to inspire hope and build a strong foundation for children.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Winley has kept this aspiration in her classroom.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy philosophy of teaching is simple; students will rise to the level of their teachers\u2019 expectation of who they are and what they are capable of becoming,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Winley has been an educator for more than 31 years and dedicated the past three years to teaching in Virginia Beach City Public Schools. She said her passion for teaching grows stronger each day.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA single word spoken by a teacher can ignite a desire to learn or quench the fire within\u201d she explained. \u201cI teach because I want to ignite the fire or purpose, destiny and creativity in my students.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She is known as an excellent leader within her school and across the division.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDr. Winley is to teaching as Michael Jordan is to basketball\u201d said Holland Elementary Principal Callie Richardson. \u201cShe performs at the highest level each and every day.
