The citywide winner will be announced at the Teacher of the Year dinner hosted by the Virginia Beach Education Foundation May 2.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Anthony Nobles is an eighth grade civics teacher at Plaza Middle School and a graduate of Virginia Beach City Public Schools.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/IMGL3805.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/IMGL3805-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-9165\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/IMGL3805-1024x683.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/IMGL3805-300x200.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/IMGL3805-768x512.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/IMGL3805-400x267.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cSchool was where I felt that I really belonged,\u201d said Nobles. \u201cThe classroom is a place where I can be myself and I am lucky that my position allows me to highlight civic-mindedness and service learning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nobles enjoys including meaningful community partnerships in his lessons. Each year he takes his students to the American Cancer Society\u2019s Relay for Life, challenging them to propose their own fundraiser to support a cause and implement their vision.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe that the health of our society depends on getting students involved, and the best way to do this is through real-world experiences and opportunities,\u201d stated Nobles. \u201cOur school and our district are stronger if we have meaningful partnerships with government decision makers and community leaders.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As a teacher, Nobles thinks the most important thing is to instill a value for education in his students and to \u201cfoster an intrinsic passion for learning.\u201d He does so through building positive relationships with students and displaying content expertise.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStudents are central in my class,\u201d Nobles said. \u201cI work with students to develop their plan and implement their ideas throughout the year, allowing them an opportunity for leadership.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Plaza Middle School Principal Deborah Prince wrote in her recommendation letter, \u201cOnce you meet him, you will know as I do, his curiosity, energy and positive spirit permeates the classroom and the school. His love for students is contagious and has a lasting impact.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His students feel the same.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeing an amazing teacher is an understatement,\u201d said Katie Royle, one of Nobles\u2019 eighth-grade students. \u201cHe is one of the most caring teachers I have come across. He is like sunshine after a rainy day; you can always count on him and his class to make your day even better.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMiddle school is tough,\u201d explained Nobles. \u201cAt a time when many students are figuring out who they want to be, I am lucky to have a small role in their lives.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI love teaching. It challenges me, fulfills me and makes me happy.
