{"id":8746,"date":"2019-02-25T08:22:51","date_gmt":"2019-02-25T13:22:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/?p=8746"},"modified":"2019-02-28T12:14:49","modified_gmt":"2019-02-28T17:14:49","slug":"dar-names-2019-history-award-honorees","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/dar-names-2019-history-award-honorees\/","title":{"rendered":"DAR names 2019 history award honorees"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>History enthusiasts of all ages packed the School Administration Building Feb. 21 for the Daughters of the American (DAR) annual awards ceremony.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is such a wonderful event each year because we not only get to honor some of our leading history teachers in the city, we also get to highlight and celebrate our students who are excelling in those classrooms and pursuing their own passions in history,\u201d said Dr. Aaron Spence, superintendent of Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS). \u201cAnd, that passion for understanding more of our history and digging deep into the foundation of this nation is vital in today\u2019s culture.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>During the hourlong ceremony, the four local DAR chapters (Lynnhaven Parish, Adam Thoroughgood, Princess Anne County and Francis Land) honored staff members and students for the instruction and study of American history.<\/p>\n<p>Each local chapter selects an American history teacher in grades five-12 who demonstrates a strong knowledge of our nation\u2019s past, fosters a spirit of patriotism and maintains high academic standards.
