{"id":8514,"date":"2018-12-13T15:54:54","date_gmt":"2018-12-13T20:54:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/?p=8514"},"modified":"2018-12-20T13:56:30","modified_gmt":"2018-12-20T18:56:30","slug":"gull-gift-shop-helps-students-invest-in-the-holidays","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/gull-gift-shop-helps-students-invest-in-the-holidays\/","title":{"rendered":"Gull Gift Shop helps students invest in the holidays"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Dey Elementary School students are getting a chance to do some holiday shopping on their own.<\/p>\n<p>The school\u2019s annual Gull Gift Shop, sponsored by the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA), is an event the community looks forward to each year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGetting out to go shopping can be difficult when you are an elementary school student,\u201d said Missy Harwood, PTA coordinator of the Gull Gift Shop. \u201cThis shop is an opportunity for them to independently do some shopping for the members of their family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-8507 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/1-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"alt=&quot;&quot;\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/1-1024x683.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/1-300x200.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/1-768x512.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/1-400x267.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>According to Harwood, the Gull Gift Shop has been a long-standing tradition at Dey Elementary for more than a decade.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEach grade gets to shop and you see kids come in carrying lists of people they want to choose gifts for and ideas of what each person may like,\u201d she explained.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-8508 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/2-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"alt=&quot;&quot;\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/2-1024x683.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/2-300x200.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/2-768x512.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/2-400x267.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In advance of the shop opening, PTA volunteers purchased a variety of items and displayed them on tables on the school\u2019s stage. Options included items for everyone, from mom to the family pet.<\/p>\n<p>PTA volunteer Sarah Winstead accompanied her daughter Jane and other kindergarteners through the shop, helping them choose items for those on their shopping list. \u201cThe kids love it,\u201d she said. \u201cIt gives them a chance to shop for mom, dad, grandma, grandpa and their siblings. Christmas morning they are extra excited to see how everyone likes their gifts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-8510 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/4-1024x675.jpg\" alt=\"alt=&quot;&quot;\" width=\"1024\" height=\"675\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/4-1024x675.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/4-300x198.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/4-768x506.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/4-400x264.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Kindergartener Austin Abulencia was enthusiastic while shopping for the 15 people he had on his list.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have to get something for everyone in my family, because all of them are important,\u201d he said. \u201cEspecially my mom and my brothers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harwood said the Gull Gift Shop makes students more invested in their purchases.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe kids want to pick out the perfect gift for their family members, so our parent volunteers are really great about pairing with a student and taking them around to help them choose items so each person on their list receives something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Cover.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-8511 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Cover-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"alt=&quot;&quot;\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Cover-1024x683.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Cover-300x200.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Cover-768x512.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Cover-400x267.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>For Winstead, the students\u2019 excitement is the best part of volunteering in the shop. \u201cI\u2019ll see them after they\u2019re done shopping and they\u2019ll be like, \u2018I got my mom this!\u2019 or, \u2018I got my dad this!\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlus,\u201d she adds. \u201cIt\u2019s just fun to be an elf for the day!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Dey Elementary School students are getting a chance to do some holiday shopping on their own.
