(BGR) workshop of the 2018-2019 school year, to be held Saturday, Nov. 18 from 8 a.m. to noon at Princess Anne High School (PAHS). This is one of three BGR events offered for Virginia Beach City Public Schools\u2019 (VBCPS) female students in fifth- through eighth-grade. Sessions for parents are also offered at each workshop.<\/p>\n<p>Sponsored by the division\u2019s Office of Opportunity and Achievement and a host high school, each BGR workshop focuses on empowerment topics for young women, including healthy living, leadership and college and career readiness.<\/p>\n<p>Organizers of the first workshop are planning student breakout sessions that will include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Social media safety: Students will learn how to navigate all the social media avenues to create a personal brand.<\/li>\n<li>Transitions: Students will participate in role-playing exercises to help alleviate fears about moving from elementary to middle to high school.<\/li>\n<li>Vision board creation: Students will identify attributes they have and the ones they want to cultivate or \u201clevel up.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>PAHS student panel: Students from the International Baccalaureate (IB) Program, advanced placement courses, Advanced Technology Center (ATC) and Governor\u2019s School of the Arts (GSA) will share their academic stories and journeys.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Princess-Anne-HS-Kelly-Arble-Sarah-Donahue-Loren-T.-McLaughlin-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-8355 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Princess-Anne-HS-Kelly-Arble-Sarah-Donahue-Loren-T.-McLaughlin-2-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"alt=&quot;&quot;\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Princess-Anne-HS-Kelly-Arble-Sarah-Donahue-Loren-T.-McLaughlin-2-1024x683.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Princess-Anne-HS-Kelly-Arble-Sarah-Donahue-Loren-T.-McLaughlin-2-300x200.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Princess-Anne-HS-Kelly-Arble-Sarah-Donahue-Loren-T.-McLaughlin-2-768x512.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Princess-Anne-HS-Kelly-Arble-Sarah-Donahue-Loren-T.-McLaughlin-2-400x267.jpg 400w, http:\/\/www.vbcpsblogs.com\/core\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Princess-Anne-HS-Kelly-Arble-Sarah-Donahue-Loren-T.-McLaughlin-2.jpg 2001w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Tenth-grader Sarah Donahue, who organized the student panel, said she got involved in Beach Girls Rock! because \u201cI just think it\u2019s really important to bring up our generation of girls as confident, individual women.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Princess Anne High School Assistant Principal Kelly Arble describes being a part of Beach Girls Rock! as \u201cone of my favorite parts of the job\u201d and encourages parents to attend the event, too. \u201cWhile the girls are going to all the different breakout sessions,\u201d she says, \u201cthere will be Parent Institute in the auditorium.\u201d Parent sessions will feature:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>ATC NOW: ATC Director Ann Marie Garvey, will provide an overview of opportunities available to students.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.securly.com\/\">Securly<\/a>: Shane Snedecor, information security manager for the division, will explain this new safety resource that allows parents the option to monitor how their children are using school-issued devices.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ibo.org\/\">IB Program<\/a>: A panel of students and staff will answer questions about the International Baccalaureate Program.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Fellow organizer Loren McLaughlin has been inspired by the students who are working to make this first BGR workshop of the year a success. \u201cWatching them want to put together something so much beyond themselves for someone else, gives me goosebumps, makes my heart smile. This is humanity.
